Victim of Residential Fire in Deering Identified
DEERING, N.H. – The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the victim of a fatal residential fire in Deering as 72-year-old Richard Berger. His cause and manner of death remain pending as the investigation continues.
The fire occurred at a single-family home on Hart Farm Road on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Deering Fire & Rescue responded to the scene at approximately 9:19 p.m., following reports of heavy fire and multiple people trapped inside the residence. Officers from the Hillsboro Police Department, who were the first to arrive, observed intense flames coming from the house.
Firefighters from Hillsboro, Bradford, Mont Vernon, Henniker, Hopkinton, Washington, Weare, Antrim, Francestown, New Boston, Goffstown, and Bennington assisted in extinguishing the fire. The blaze was brought under control at 11:46 p.m.
Tragically, with the assistance of a New Hampshire State Police human remains detection canine, Berger was located deceased inside the home. Additionally, an adult male who had been trapped on the second floor was rescued by a neighbor and transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to a Boston hospital for further treatment.
The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and Deering Fire & Rescue are continuing their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
